Materials

At Kalama Jewelry, we are passionate about creating unique and beautiful handmade jewelry pieces. Each piece is meticulously crafted with aloha, capturing the essence of the materials used.

What sets Kalama Jewelry apart is our commitment to craftsmanship and attention to detail. We believe that every piece of jewelry should be a work of art, and we take pride in creating pieces that are not only beautiful but also durable and long-lasting.

Our jewelry is made using a variety of materials, carefully selected for their quality and aesthetic appeal. Using demi-fine materials such as gold fill allows us to bring beautiful and affordable jewelry to you that is tarnish-resistant, waterproof, and safe for sensitive skin.

We outlined the materials we use in our jewelry below and how to care for your pieces.

14k Gold Filled

14k gold filled is a high-quality material that consists of a thick layer of 14k gold bonded to a base metal core. This process creates a durable and long-lasting piece of jewelry that retains the beauty and shine of pure gold. It is popular choice due to its high quality, durability and hypoallergenic properties.

Gold-filled jewelry is safe to wear in water, excluding hot tubs, swimming pools, and the ocean as the chemicals and salt can damage the jewelry. We recommend removing your jewelry before exercising, putting on lotions, makeup, and perfume.

To clean, use a jewelry polishing cloth and wipe away any dirt and chemicals on the jewelry, and safely store in a box or pouch to keep it dry. We do not recommend using ultrasonic cleaner on gold-filled jewelry, especially on chains.

Sterling Silver

Sterling silver is a popular material used in jewelry making. It is an alloy made of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper. This combination gives sterling silver its strength and durability while maintaining its beautiful shine.

To care for your sterling silver jewelry, soak your jewelry in warm water for 5-10 minutes, and gently scrub with a soft-bristled brush. Rinse your jewelry with warm water and pat dry with a soft cloth. You can use a silver polishing cloth to buff the jewelry to restore its shine. Store your sterling silver jewelry in a dry, cool place to prevent tarnishing.

Freshwater Pearls

Freshwater pearls are formed primarily in lakes and rivers. They come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors, ranging from classic white to pastel shades of pink, lavender, and peach. Each freshwater pearl is unique, with its own natural imperfections and luster. These imperfections, known as "baroque" characteristics, give freshwater pearls their organic and one-of-a-kind appeal. The irregular shapes and textures of freshwater pearls make them a popular choice for those seeking a more natural and artistic look.

To care for your pearl jewelry, gently wipe away any dirt with a jewelry polishing cloth. Avoid direct contact with chemicals found in perfume, lotions, and cosmetics on pearls as they are very delicate. Store your pearl jewelry in a cool dry place, inside a jewelry box or pouch.

Gemstones

We use both natural and synthetic gemstones in our creations. Natural gemstones are formed naturally in the earth's crust over millions of years. They are created through a combination of heat, pressure, and various geological processes. Synthetic gemstones, also known as lab-created or man-made gemstones, are created in a laboratory using the same chemical composition as natural gemstones. They are grown under controlled conditions, replicating the natural processes that occur in the earth. Synthetic gemstones offer an affordable and sustainable alternative to natural gemstones. We use a variety of natural gemstones in our jewelry pieces. These gemstones are carefully selected for their quality and beauty.

To keep your stones clean and shiny, gently wipe away dirt with a jewelry polishing cloth or scrub them lightly with a soft-bristled brush, warm water, and mild soap.
